Survivor — also called eliminator or last man standing — has the shortest rulebook of any pool format and the longest tail of regret.

How it works

Each week you pick one team to win. Straight up, no spread, margin irrelevant. If your team wins you advance; if they lose you are eliminated. The catch that makes it a real problem: you can never pick the same team twice all season. The last entry standing takes the pot, and if everyone goes out in the same week the previous week’s survivors usually split it.

Why it is harder than it looks

A full season runs longer than the list of teams you genuinely trust. You are not picking the best team this Sunday — you are managing a finite inventory of good teams across an entire season, and every week you spend one you cannot get it back.

The second trap is that the obvious pick is obvious to everyone. When the week’s consensus favourite loses, half the pool dies at once. Surviving a week that most entries do not is worth far more than surviving a week everybody survives.

Strategy that actually helps

• Plan three or four weeks ahead, not one. Sketch which teams you intend to use and when, then adjust as the season moves.
• Do not spend your strongest teams in September. Save them for the weeks where the slate is thin.
• Watch where the line moved, not just where it sits. A favourite that opened at −7 and closed at −4 is a different proposition than the number suggests.
• Check the late injury news. Survivor punishes a Saturday inactive far harder than a pick ’em pool does.
• Think about ownership. Surviving on a slightly worse team nobody else took thins the field around you when the chalk goes down.
• Home field, rest and travel still matter at the margins, and survivor is a game of margins.

Common variants

Plenty of pools soften the format. Strikes give every entry two or three lives before elimination. Buybacks let you re-enter for a fee through a set week. Multiple entries let you hedge across different teams. Some pools require two picks per week from a certain point onward, which drains the good teams fast. Confirm which of these your commissioner is running before you plan your season — they change the strategy completely.
