Over/under pools drop the question of who wins entirely. You are picking whether a game is high-scoring or low-scoring, which turns out to be a genuinely different skill.

How it works

Each game carries a posted total — the combined points both teams are expected to score. You pick over or under on some or all of the slate and you are graded on the final combined score. Take the over at 48.5, watch the game finish 27–24, and you cash by two and a half points regardless of who won.

What actually moves a total

  • Wind. The most underrated factor on the board, and far more disruptive than rain or cold. Sustained wind over roughly 15 mph suppresses the deep passing game and the kicking game at once.
  • Quarterback changes. A backup usually pulls a total down several points, and the market often moves before the news is formally confirmed.
  • Offensive line and receiver injuries. Less dramatic than a quarterback, but they compound — fewer explosive plays means longer drives and fewer of them.
  • Pace and pass rate. Two efficient offences that run the ball and burn clock can produce a low-scoring game between good teams. Points come from possessions as much as from talent.
  • Venue. Domes remove weather from the equation entirely, which is why dome totals sit higher before anyone has played a snap.

Strategy

You are graded against the number at lock time, so know when your pool locks picks. A total that has moved three points since it opened is the single most useful signal available to you — something changed, and it is usually worth finding out what.

Resist grading a team on last week’s final score. One shootout does not make an offence, and scoring regresses harder week to week than most people expect.

Variants

Some pools have you pick every game; others ask for a fixed number of best bets, which rewards selectivity over volume. A few award bonus points for landing closest to the actual total. Check whether a push — the final landing exactly on the number — counts as a win, a loss or a void, since that varies by commissioner.
