Pick ’em is the format most people start with, and the one most likely to keep a whole office engaged into December, because nobody is ever fully eliminated.

How it works

Every week you pick a winner in every game on the slate. One point per correct pick, highest total wins — weekly, season-long, or both. There is no elimination, so a bad week costs you ground rather than your season.

Straight up or against the spread

Straight up is the friendlier version: just pick who wins. It also means a strong week is mostly a matter of favourites holding, so the standings bunch together and the title is often decided by a handful of genuine coin flips.

Against the spread is the sterner test. Every game is priced to be roughly even, so the field hovers near half and small edges compound across a season. If your group takes it seriously, ATS is the version worth playing.

Confidence points

The best twist on the format. With sixteen games you assign each pick a value from 16 down to 1, and you only collect on the ones you get right. Being right is no longer enough — you have to be right about how certain you are. It rewards anyone who can tell a near-lock from a game they merely lean, and it punishes people who rate every favourite the same.

Strategy

• Your edge is in the games nobody is sure about. Everyone gets the obvious ones right.
• In confidence pools, spend your top numbers on the widest spreads, not on the teams you like most.
• Late-season games involving teams with nothing to play for are the most reliable way to lose a pool you were leading.
• Check kickoff times. An early game that turns on inactives can change how you want to weight a later one.
• If you are behind in a season-long pool, differentiate. Matching the field guarantees you finish where you already are.

Tiebreakers

Most pools settle ties on the combined score of a nominated game, usually the late national window. Take it seriously: in a large group the tiebreaker decides real money more often than anyone expects. Start from the posted total rather than a guess, then nudge it for weather and pace.
